Namechecking in Cyberspace

I'm so excited! I've been writing in this space for less than 48 hours, and I've already been linked to two other blogs!

Okay, okay, they're both friends -- one brand-new and one rather well-established, but both fine people, good writers, and they understand when I make references to something besides pop culture. In short, they're my favorite kind of people: sensible, well-read, creative, thoughtful and tolerant of my eccentricities. I suspect if we all three found ourselves sitting around a fireplace some night sipping a cool libation, we'd find lots to keep us talking for hours.

Anyway, meet Erin and Sally, both of whom are cleverer than I, in that they know how to properly link to other sites! If this works, I'll be surprised!

Hi. Your links work. Did Sally teach you to do that?

Hi Dennis! I've read your posts on FineOldFamly and seen your site as well. I did read your very good instructions on posting links on a blog on Sally's site. However, I cheated and used the tool on the "create post" portion of Blogger:. It's quite simple and very handy, both of which are perfect for a dork (just ask my daughter) like me.

No, she was already smart. WHAT tool on the "create post" portion of Blogger? I didn't see any tool.

Of course, in one browser I see all kinds of things, like the icons to make italics and boldface -- but it won't let me put the curser in the box to start writing.I don't know why. It just won't. I can title a post, I can put tags on a post, I can choose font and put it in italics -- I just can't write the post. In the other browser, I can actually write a post -- but minus tools of any kind, which is why it looks as though I don't know the correct way to format a book title, for instance.

So if you're a dork . . . I shudder to think what all this makes me.

Actually, it took her three days to figure out why she could write posts, but not actually publish them. I still don't understand why I couldn't do it, but Safari does not support Blogger, so I switched to Mozilla Firefox. Once I did that, not only did I get the super-nifty, handy-dandy tool bar, but I was actually able to post TEXT as well, which makes me happy.

And re-reading my posts, I realize it looks like I don't know how to proofread, so you're still definitely a few paces ahead of me!

I have Mozilla -- that's the one that won't let me type in the box where you're supposed to type the body of your post. As I said, I can title them all day long . . . which could be a concept, eh? And I can post comments in Mozilla. But to write a blog post, I have to go back to Explorer, which doesn't load any of the tools. Bleah bleah bleah.

What a drag! I have no idea why Mozilla wouldn't allow you access to the tools. Is the "help" function useful?

Of course, I came home this afternoon and discovered that Firefox was no longer on my desktop. It keeps disappearing from my Dock and I had to completely re-download it, as it was nowhere to be found on my hard drive. Go figure. I think perhaps Safari is jealous and did something unspeakable...

Dennis, jump in here. What are we doing wrong?

No, no, with Mozilla I get tools all day long. Just no text-writing capability. With Explorer: text, but no tools. If I could find a way to combine the two, I would have the perfect browser. (and if I got up out this chair and put the laundry away, my house would be a heck of a lot less imperfect, too).

And if I did a little housework every day instead of letting it all stack up until the day before we are having out-of-town company, I wouldn't be tired and cranky. I never learn.

I just spent thirty minutes trying to compose a coherent post about Gene Robinson's latest announcement. I'm so flustered I had to delete everything I wrote. As usual where he is concerned, my head is spinning, when it's not busy trying to explode.
