Voice of America

A warm happy birthday to Walt Whitman, born this day in 1819. More than any other American writer, Whitman captured the energy and soul of a burgeoning young nation in his poems and essays. Visit the Whitman Archive to hear him read from "I Hear America Singing." Our good fortune is that Whitman was alive during the early days of audio recording--today more than 1200 performances of his lyrical readings survive, giving us a taste of his beautiful and powerful writing, read as he intended. A powerful man, a powerful voice and a powerful intellect.
