Today is the birthday in 1879 of Ottorino Respighi, whose composition "The Birds," makes my heart and feet feel like dancing in a meadow. Though a citizen of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he wrote like a Baroque composer, and his work compares successfully with that of Vivaldi and Scarlatti.

Ah, the Italians... I wish I had a bottle of Sangiovese, a CD player, and perhaps some nice cheese and bread. And of course, a geologist.
